On September 3, EXCAVO celebrates the opening of Echoringer featuring new work by Toronto-born, Montreal-based artist Lauren Pelc-McArthur and London, ON artist, Michael Thompson.

For their joint exhibition with the gallery, Pelc-McArthur and Thompson address myths and illusions with an anxiety that gestures to the real, the fateful and inescapable. Myths require repetition and constant renegotiation for their preservation, which is not unlike the contemporary terms of painting, where continual evolution substitutes the development of concretely defined artistic movements.

Vintage photographs, sci-fi tropes, screen aesthetics and ’60’s psychedelia forego their original contexts in these works, culminating in uncanny scenes that function as a proxy for reality; defamiliarizing the familiar.

A Concordia University MFA Graduate and 2018 RBC Painting Award Finalist, Pelc-McArthur received the 2019 Nancy Petry Foundation Award for outstanding emerging Canadian artist in the field of painting. A Graduate from Western University’s BFA program, Thompson is a University of Guelph MFA Candidate recently completing a studio-intensive residency at The Slade School of Fine Art at University College London, England.

PERCEIVED REALITIES

ALISON BARTLETT

Sunday September 13, 2-6PM
EXCAVO Fine Art
711 Central Ave.
London, ON

On Sunday, September 13 from 2-6PM EXCAVO is pleased to exhibit Alison Bartlett’s ‘Perceived Realities.’ This single day installation explores the act of aimless walking and uses photography, sculpture and artefacts to invite the perceiver to suspend themselves in liminal space.

Bartlett is an architectural designer from London, ON, interested in human interaction with the built environment, completing a Double Master’s Degree in Architecture and Interior Architecture at the University of Oregon. Through empirical and theoretical research she is interested in representing conceptual ideas and socio-political forces through built form and spatial experiences. She has worked in Boston and New York and is currently working for Tezontle Studio, a sculpture and architecture firm in Mexico City.

11:00AM – 4:00PM
& By Appointment

On July 18, EXCAVO celebrates the opening of its doors for the summer season with Field Studies, an exhibition of recent work by Montreal born, London-based artist, Gerald Pedros, curated by Roberta Grosland.

For his inaugural exhibition with the Gallery, Pedros’ diverse visual language finds release in exploring fragility and connectedness between figures—touching, overlapping and  condensing movements within a single frame in juxtaposition with starkly isolated subjects. What is our orientation as observers of these interactions in consideration of the space occupied by our own lives, particularly since the global lockdown?

Pedros’ rapid-fire manner of production is a testimony to the artist’s continued interest in the expressive potential of the human form. Amorphous figures drawn from observation reveal insect-like contours and sharp, blockish protrusions countered by a conjoined softness that is enticingly ambiguous.

Born in Montreal and completing his BFA and MFA at Concordia University, Pedros has exhibited extensively internationally throughout his five-decade career, with work in numerous collections, including;  Centre de Gravure, Geneva, Guinness Brewery, Dublin, Museo Nacional de la Estampa, Mexico City, Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa and Museum London.

We’re delighted to feature 100 limited editions that were produced as a result of Carpe Diem’s residency program at the Pombal Palace in Lisbon. Meant to be affordably priced while maintaining high standards of quality, these prints are developed by up-and-coming emerging artists to generate the interest of both new and established collectors of contemporary international art. The concept is simple, quality art should be available to everyone.

The Curatorial Program consists of exhibitions as a result of residencies by national and international artists accompanied by conferences, talks, workshops and guided tours. Since 2013 CDAP has presented these editions in a range of over 30 spaces globally including Paris, Berlin, Athens, Seoul, New York, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
